Dana Point Festival of Whales

It’s whale season and Dana Point is celebrating! For the next two weekends Dana Point will be honoring these fantastic beasts at the 47th Annual Festival of Whales. From December through April locals and visitors can enjoy the spectacular sights of the world’s largest mammals migrating between Alaska and Mexico. Many experts believe that the Dana Point Headlands, which jut 200 feet into the Pacific, serve as a landmark for the whales, and we are lucky enough to get 40 or 50 passing by every day during peak season! The weekends of March 3-4, and March 10-11 will give all of us the opportunity to attend various whale watching excursions, lectures, hands-on clinics, concerts, barbecues, and wine, beer, and spirits gardens so that we can learn about, and celebrate, these beautiful whales!

Having lived in Dana Point since 1976, we’ve certainly seen our fair share of whales! Nothing could be more exciting than seeing the first spout or breach of the season – knowing that several wonderful months of sightings will follow! Watching these beautiful creatures breach, jump, and feed is just thrilling! Whether it is a playful pod or a splash from single fluke, it’s always exciting! We consider ourselves lucky to be entertained by their immense size and incredible acrobatics every year at this time!

When we opened sea & sky last September it was an absolute no-brainer that we would carry whales as part of our coastal decor. After all, Dana Point and whales are practically synonymous, right?!? These sea creatures are whimsical and fun additions to create a beach chic vibe. When you come to all the festivities celebrating the whales, please stop by the shop and take a peek! The events will kick off with a parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 3rd on PCH – be sure to wave to Princess Lala who will be on the Killer Dana float – and most of all, enjoy the 47th Annual Festival of Whales in Dana Point!
